Big Month For Reds

Despite the fronts coming through about every three days and the high winds they bring with them, we've been having great catches of redfish. The key has been fishing the high tides on the flats. The strong southeast winds before the fronts hold the water in and keep the baitfish on the windward banks of the lakes. It can be tough keeping the boat in position as you troll along the grassline, but the effort is worth it. Schools of 6 to 10 pound reds have been running right next to the grass in pretty big numbers. The best lure has been just the plain old cocohoe tail on a 1/4 oz jighead. The best retrieve is slowly bouncing it along the bottom so you will also pick up the occasional flounder in its path. If you are just interested in reds a straight retrieve will do. The top water lures have not produced much yet, even though the water temperature has been in the high 60's. That will change very soon. April is a big month for reds, specks, and flounder. It's time to plan your trip.
