Live Pogy Producing Nice Boxes of Reds & Trout The juvenile pogies are a good size now and we will be fishing with them through October. Pogies (menhaden) are an oily herring-like fish that have flashy silver sides. The oil produces a great scent to attract the reds and specks, and their flash can be easily seen by the predator fish. Our last several trips have been good ones, most limiting out on reds. We are also catching some 1.5 to 3 pound speckled trout and 1 to 4 pound flounder in the same holes as the reds. The areas we have been targeting are shallow flats near dropoffs. The fish are in the shallows early and move out to the dropoffs as the day heats up. On overcast or rainy days the fish have stayed mostly in the shallows. To add to the action there are a tremendous number of ladyfish in the marshes this year. The ladyfish are frustrating to me because they cut lines and cost me a lot of tackle, but they sure do put up a good fight and are fun to watch as they rocket out of the water several times when hooked. It's a great time to go fishing.
