The past two weeks have given us some ok fishing. The trout bite has been decent from sun up until around 11am or noon. Most of the keeper trout have been caught on live pinfish or live shrimp. Trout are also taking soft plastic jerk baits like the bass assassin saltwater shad in chartreuse or electric chicken or D.O.A. shrimp. From noon until about 5 pm the bite has been slow and I have been using this time to run up towards the channel around Highland View and catch some sharks, spanish, and bluefish. There is no shortage of sharks in the North end of the bay right now. There are a lot of blacktips, spinners, and sharpnose around as well as a few of their larger cousins. We have been casting gotchas to catch blues and spanish while we have been waiting on sharks to grab one of the lines off the stern. The best advice I can give right now is to fish early. Afternoon storms have been firing almost everyday for the last week and I feel like my afternoon trips should have been considered storm chasing charters instead of fishing charters. This past Saturday I ran across a log floating in the bay and did some damage to my hull. Looks like I will be out of the water for at least the next week for repairs. Hope everyone doesn't mind doing some kayak fishing until then. Capt. John McDow 732-278-2672
