New Mexico Fishing Report for The San Juan River

San Juan River

San Juan River is Flowing at 900 cfs, the water is clear and relatively clear of moss. We remain dry with fire restrictions for the entire state. As far as the fires in the 4-Corners area most days there is a haze in the air, at some times we can smell smoke. Albuquerque is having more trouble with smoke than we are. CATCH & RELEASE This area of the river is fishing best in the mornings with: Some dry fly fishing, Griffith’s gnat, single midges in size #24 or 26 some action on larger patterns like ants. • UFO’s (tan or brown size 24's) • Red Spots ( a smaller version of the Red Hot) • Gray RS-2's and Johnny Flashes • Black Midge emergers UPPER FLATS TO TEXAS HOLE Good most of the day, some dry fly fishing I did really good in this area of the river this week with Gray Johnny Flashes size 22, in the deeper main Channel, I just lengthened my leader and put on a little more weight. (#6) • Same flies as above for the AM • San Juan worms (AM) • Chocolate beatis patterns like RS-2, Johnny Flashes • Flashback Pheasant tails TEXAS HOLE TO LOWER FLATS I heard a 24" rainbow was caught in this area this week on a Flashy Midge in olive, size #24 • San Juan worms ( brown or orange) • Gray or chocolate RS-2 • Midge emergers Black or olive • Red larva and UFO’s LOWER FLATS TO BAIT WATER • San Juan worms (brown is best) • Caddis larva patterns I use a double beadhead with pheasant body • Flashback Pheasant tails • Chocolate beatis patterns • Gray Johnny Flash The crowds are still light, and the water level is up a little, (we need to send more water down stream to the endangered Pike Minnow) The caddis hatch is just beginning to come off, ( Some days are heavy and some days the Caddis are a no show) should be perfect around the beginning of July. Tight lines Mark
