New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Salmon River

Lake Ontario, Oneida Lake Report This Saturday is the opener for bass and with the warm weather most of the smallmouth bass should be out of the rivers and into the lake. Nightcrawlers, live minnows, hair jigs and plastic jigs should all be good bait to use. The bass season is expected to be good as there is no cold water upwellings so there should be plenty of fish out on the big lake. The brown trout continue to be active with the early morning bite. Good fishing has been in front of the Nine Mile buoy line. Look for the trout in 50-100 ft. of water there. Also look for the browns off the Catfish Creek area, Mexico Bay and west to Fair Haven. We spent Saturday in the Harbor as the waves were big and picked away at some browns. Sunday was much much better as we ran to were the fish were and it was sick! The salmon are roaming in the deeper water and are constantly on the move in search of bait. We recently hooked five landed three nice chinooks in 80 to 120 FOW and only spent about two hours looking. Dreamweaver Coyote Ugly spoon spoons and dodgers with Atomik flies took the bites out there Remember the area around the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Facility is off limits to boating. The restricted area stretches 1,000 yards offshore and extends from the Alcan plant to the Sunset Bay area along Lake Ontario, east of the city of Oswego. Ran a few more trips on Oneida recently and we hit them real good. Same stuff, sonar jigs and dark colred jigs tipped with a worm. We hit fish from 15 FOW out to 40 FOW.
