New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Salmon River

Report for Saturday October2 Spent the night out on the lake with Clyde the Glide. No, not clyde Drexler but my a long time client Clyde. We smoked af few cigars, told stories, watched the stars and caught a few fish. It was not fast and fuirious but we put in 6 hours and went 2 for 10, with one pushing 30 pounds! The good news is that as I am writing this, Tom Burke called to tell me that a real good push of fish is coming through the lower end of the river. Not a major run by any means but lot’s of fish and plenty of action. Finally! Let’s hope this run lasts a few days and things can get back to normal. Up river there are fish starting to spawn and we took a few yesterday morning floating Pineville to Rt 2A. There are a lot of people around this weekend, so the pressue is on. Mail Box Hi Troy, my name is Joe Pastuszek. I will be heading up to Pulaski on wed morn. I am staying at the mouth of the salmon river for 2 days.(wish it was longer but made a commitment to my 5 year old son). I was curious about the regulations, I know there is no snagging, but can you use lures that have a treble hook on them, or do you have to replace them with single hooks? I usually fish right at the mouth of the river towards the estuary, but this year i am bringing waders to try exploring better spots if the mouth is not productive. The last few years I have been getting skunked, but this year i'm thinking of trying a 3 foot leader off a swivel with an egg sac on the end.. Do you have any better suggestions..... Thanks for your great web site, and tight lines to you. Joe Joe, From a guiding standpoint I would have to say that your best bet is to hire a good reputable guide. I knowledgeable guide will show you how and how not to do it. The fact that all good guides are booked about a year to 18 months in advance, so that wouldn't be an option for this trip. You can use lures with trebles in the lake only and up to the first buoy below the lighthouse marina. If you are fishing up river a 3 to 4 foot leader with an egg sac, single egg or small fly will do the trick. Don't waste your time in the slow deep pools. The fish will be too spooky. Fish the fast water at the head and tails of those pools and runs. Use light fluorocarbon leader. I like 12 to 15 main line with a 8 to 10 pound leader. Hooks in size 6 or 8. I like a mustad 37132 but they also have a new hook that they previewed at the ICAST show in July it is a CO68 Wet/Nymph Caddis - 2x Heavy / 2x Short hook. I only have a few but they are working great. They should be available anytime. Good luck, Troy If you a have question or comment, feel free to e-mail me anytime.
