Cold High Water Been a few days since I posted an update. It is that time of year that I am catching up on projects and only fishing three to four days a week. Here is an update. Fished Monday with Bernie & Ray from Maryland. Hard core Saltwater boys and they have fished that lake with me as well. First winter trip and first river trip. Thank God the temps were in the 30's cause Bernie still had the chills! Sorry. Anyway, these guys are good fisherman and quickly adapted to running floats and bouncing bottom. We fished everything from Altmar to Rt 2A and came up 2 for 7 with 1 brown and one steelhead. At least we had a few more bites than the past couple trips. All in all a nice day to be fishing with good company and fantastic venison jerky and bologna. Thanks Ray! Bernie with his first Salmon River trout! Rays first steelhead sucked down a pink egg sac under a float! Today's Report! Well, What a difference a warm up makes. Today felt like April! The temps were in the high 40's today and the fish were liking it! Spot number one for us produced two bites and nothing to show for it. 10:30, we got to make a move. Spot number two, Bang Tango! The bite was on! Fish #1 for Charlie. Big fish of the year! 33.5 inches. What a great fight on 4# test. This brute smashed a pink egg sac! Fish #2 A nice male! Almost fish #3 for Doyle. It went away. Another fish for Charlie! This female was spitting eggs and had another hook in it's mouth! I got to land this speckled beauty and grabbed a quick shot with one hand! The fish continued to bite and we continued to catch them. If this is a sign of what 2006 has in store I would be thinking about a steelhead trip real soon! All fish came on pink and or white egg sacs. Some under floats and some bottom bouncing. The water was clear and we dropped down to 4# test. Lot's of fish around, it is just a matter of putting your time in and being in the right spot at the right time. Good Luck, Troy Mailbox troy, just wanted to thank you for a great day out on the water.wish the fish cooperated a little bit more but as they say thats why they call it fishin and not catchin!!! i feel it definetly wasnt due to lack of effort and you did everything in your power to try to get us a few more bites. great scenery, good conversation and two nice browns definatly beat any day at work i've ever had. heres our fishin report for sun and mon. we started out on the salmon with no luck by mid morning so we made the move to oswego. when we got there the water was up but that has never stopped us befor so we had at it. we ended the day 3 for 5 with a mix of steelies and rainbows. on mon we had a catch of 3 for 6 with the same mix of fish. you were right about that west wind!!!! once again thanks for a great day and we'll see you out there. eric and jason Glad you had a good time. Thanks again, Troy Troy, I have to tell you, I was coming up there with a group under the name of %&^&@$%&@$, and he simply would not go with anyone else but the %&@$%&^&. But he is the one who started my trips there, so I had no choice for awhile. I, and my 3 other friends did not like going on that boat. The mate was nice enough, but the skipper was very hard-headed, and not all that smart. We think you are a very smart captain. I have had the pleasure of being on the boats of a few REALLY good captains, and I consider you one. I'm talking instinctive fishermen. There are few around. Even less are captains. Many just do it for the money (a job) like many professions. I used to go out with ED Miller in Mauntauk for Striper, (on The Westlake) but he got Parkinson's and retired last year. He founded the Westlake Marina & owned it. He didn't take out many charters, but we helped him as pseudo-mates. We took his last charter with him last October. I also go out with Rom Whitaker on "The Release" out of Hatteras for Tuna, Marlin, Wahoo, and Dolphin. The 3 of you are in MY book of all-time most savvy fish-hunters. Just wanted you to know. I will never come to NY again and NOT go with you. Bernie (Ray feels the same way, but he doesn't like trolling, so he is happy coming up for a drift trip). OK Bernie Thanks for all the confidence. I go to bed everynight knowing I did my best. January Open Dates 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 24, 31.
