Lake Ontario, Salmon and Oswego River Fishing Report Global Warning? Here we are in March and another artic blast is chilling down the north country. The cold weather and wind will likely make unpleasant conditions for the next couple of days. The water level has remained around 7,000cfs on the Oswego with an occasionalspike or drop. As conditions improve, look for good steelhead fishing near lock 7 and off the highwall. Egg sacs and pink worms under a float and white bucktail jigs tipped with a mousy grub or minnow. On the Salmon River I am geeting mixed reports from anglers, some get into fish, while others did not, it all depended on where they fished and experience level. On Sunday the Douglaston Salmon Run went unfished due to slush ice that did not clear. We are expecting cold temperatures and wind early in the week with temperatures rebounding to near normal by the weekend. Overall the most productive techniques have been bottom bouncing with flies or egg sacs and float fishing with egg sacs or pink worms. Suggested patterns: Pheasant tails, Rusher nymphs, Hare's ear, Soft hackle nymphs and black or olive stoneflies. Reports of good to excellent walleye, yellow perch and panfish catches are coming in on a daily basis from ice-fishermen on Oneida. Big Bay has been the host of great Pickerel and Crappie fishing. Pickerel have a preference for silver shiners fished with tip ups and Crappie are responding to finesse fishing with spikes or mousies. This is the month for the mega yellow perch bite and very consistent walleye bite. Structure in the offshore regions with precipitous drops are your best locations for walleyes. Yellow perch like the fresh water shrimp havens found on the manganese nodule bottom (pancakes) affectionately named by locals. On sandy Pond anglers are taking northern pike from many areas around the pond and perch are active off Seeber Shores, Greene Point and the Wigwam. There is an occasional walleye being reported in the mix.
