Novermber fly fishing in Montana

Bozeman

As we move into the late fall there is still some very good fishing opportunities to be had. The morning fishing is pretty tough with the colder temperatures, but the late morning and afternoon hours have been more productive. The baetis hatch is winding down and some wintery weather is starting to set in. Browns are currently spawning or finished spawning depending on the fishery, by the end of November most will be spawned out. The spring creeks are now on winter rates and are still fishing great. Miles guided at DePuy spring creek the other day and they had consistent action and were able to throw dries over the baetis hatch for about two and a half hours after lunch. The best bets right now are probably the Upper and Lower Madison, Gallatin and Spring Creeks. The Missouri between the lakes has also been producing some big fish. In general, the best fishing will be with nymph rigs before and after the hatch. On the spring creeks and occassionally on the other fisheries you can also throw baetis dries and emergers during the hatch. A few browns are still hitting streamers but as the water temps drop you need to slow the retrieve and get closer to the bottom. For more on Montana fly fishing visit http://www.montanaangler.com
