Redfish on the Beaufort River flats

Beaufort

As the charter fishing business has been rather quiet for the last couple of weeks, have spent more time guiding quail hunts than fishing. But had a beautiful day yesterday, with a midday low tide, so decided to do a little scouting in the morning. Went to the Broad River and fished one flat all morning. As the water was mirror slick and the water gin clear I had no trouble finding fish. I found 5 different schools, and ended up catching 7 nice Redfish, with the biggest pushing 10 pounds and measuring 29 to 30 inches. I would only catch one or two per school, then ease around them to find another one. All the fish were caught throwing a Gulp shrimp in white with the chartreuse tail on a jighead. The key is to get the bait in front of the moving fish so as not to spook them with the cast, and then gently jig it as they get to the bait. They were really on a good bite.
