Redfish, Tarpon in Port Royal Sound

Beaufort

The last couple of weeks have been fairly consistent for the Redfish bite off the main flats in Port Royal Sound. The fish are really looking for shrimp and finger mullet, as the estuary is loaded right now with bait. We've done well with live shrimp under popping corks in shallow water, 1 to 3 feet. The Tarpon are also in full numbers now in the sound, and out on the channel sandbars. They are moving in and out with the schools of Menhaden, and diving Pelicans are the key to locating these fish. Live, or fresh dead, Menhaden are the bait of choice. I like fishing them either freelined or under a cork, moving with the bait. It is not uncommon to see a dozen or more rolling and feeding with a bait pod. These fish are in the 70 to 140 pound range average, and can also be caught off the rocks in the deeper parts of the Sound.
