LAKE BUCHANAN, Texas Except for cooler than normal water temperatures (46 degrees) conditions are excellent; slightly stained, less than 6' low with water up in ideal spawning areas. LARGEMOUTH are fair along secondary creek points and in channels of 6'-10'. SLOW presentations are necessary using 1/4 oz. pumpkin/watermelon Terminator jigs, crawfish 3" Creme Super Tubes and wacky rigged Scoundrel worms. STRIPERS have moved to midlake, primarily from The Willows to Garret Island and Paradise Point. Drifting live bait in 18'-30' and trolling 1/2 oz. bucktail jigs on down riggers is producing. The annual WHITE BASS migratory spawning "run" is getting underway slowly but all indications are that this will be a very good year with limits of 12"-17" Whites being taken in Morgan/Beaver Creeks and all the way up the Colorado River. We anticipate the "run" will be 100% between Feb. 8th & Valentine' Day. Vertically jigging Horizon Pirk Minnows, casting 1/8 oz. Spin Traps or Tiny 'Traps, live minnows and trolling shad-type crankbaits will all produce. LAKE LBJ, Texas Flooding in the month of November of last year has restructured a lot of the mid-lake area from Beaver Island to the confluence of the Llano and Colorado Rivers. All remaining spawning areas are covered with water and in good conditions. LARGEMOUTH are holding over brush and rock piles along 8'-12' breaklines with some early males moving into shallow rip rap on sunny days to feed on crawfish. Therefore, crawfish imitating lures are the most productive: 1/4 oz. pumpkin Terminator jigs, crawfish 3" Creme Super Tubes and medium running crankbaits are good choices. WHITE BASS are grouped up along main channels and beginning to push up lake and both river arms. Right now trolling #3 crankbaits on lead core line through schools in 30' of water on channel turns is working. Very soon the same schools will be moving up onto gravel and sandy flats with some current over them to spawn. 1/8 oz. white bucktail jigs, Spin Traps, plastic grubs and Horizon Pirk Minnows will all take limits at that time. The Crappie will begin to move out of the 16'-20' level and into 1'-3' to spawn by Valentine's Day. Creme Tiny Tubes on 1/32 or 1/16 oz. jigheads in chartreuse and various combinations as well as the same size of and color of Curb's crappie jigs and live minnows are the ticket. CANYON LAKE, Texas Optimum water conditions are excellent for great spring fishing. Some (male) LARGEMOUTH are already moving out of of the 12'-15' areas and onto spawning areas. Females are still reluctant but can be coaxed into biting a 1/4 oz. pumpkin Terminator or Curb's jig, Creme Devil's Tongues or crawfish or chartreuse Creme Super Tube. SMALLMOUTH are in the spawing mode now. Look for them over open gravel flats in 4'-8' of water in the back of creeks and packets at mid and lower lake areas. Split shot or drop shot rigged Devil's Tongues, crawfish-imitating crankbaits and 3" Creme Super Tubes will work. STRIPERS have migrated to the creeks and mouth of the Guadalupe River. Bucktail jigs, 1/4 oz. Spin Traps and Horizon Pirk Minnows are producing. WHITE BASS, too, are grouped up in Cranes Mill ready to make the spawning "run" upriver as soon as the water temperature stabilizes. Right now locate schools and try vertically jigging 1/4 oz. Horizon Pirk Minnows white 1/8 oz. Curb's bucktail jigs or Spin Traps.
