It's officially spring. The cobia are here along with thousands of kids on spring break. A good time of year to be on the water 'cause you sure don't want to be on the roads. The first cobia was caught last Sunday with several others seen and a couple hooked. The weather went South rapidly Monday and shut off the run. Yesterday (thurs) was beautiful and a few fish were caught down past Navarre. Today should have been the first "real" day but it's 6 AM right now and pouring rain and lightning bolts. If the weather gets nice for 2 or more days in a row the floodgates will open. I'm waiting to call my folks this AM to see if we're going or not but right now I doubt it. As I often say, there are only 3 things in life that scare me; my wife, the IRS and lightning. I ran the "new" boat for the 1st time yesterday out of Destin. Ran good, have a few things that need changing but nothing that can't wait till next winter. We bottom fished for about 3 hours and caught 6 grouper with 3 being right good ones , also had a nice pile of triggers. We then looked for cobias for a couple hours but only saw a big turtle that was by himself. Running out of Destin reminded me why I love my beach launch fishin'. We had to run over an hour to get to an area that wasn't already "pounded". Launching at Grayton we never run more than 20 minutes before we're fishin'. Sure is nice to be able to go when ther's a sewll tho, and the view from the tower is better ( and more stable). Plenty of nice Red Snapper around. The first week or so of the season should have a lot of glory fish coming in. It's always that hard decsion tho- cobias or snappers?. My call is is leave early, catch snaps and then make it a long day and find a few flatheads!! Capt larry
