Once again it's pouring rain and the wind is whistling through the crack in my window. It must be time to sit down and write a report , it seems this is when I always do it. Yesterday the weather must have been built by the chamber of commerce. It was chilly in the AM when I launched the boat but the wind stayed light all day with the gulf almost slick when we came in at noon . It had warmed up enough so that I was in shorts and shirtsleeves and the water felt good when I hopped over to hold up on the beach. That we had a box of groupers probably helped keep me warm but the fact is summer is almost here. I took a local couple out and a friend of thiers from Tennessee. The friend was a big smallmouth fisherman and I was told to put him on some grouper and show him what the saltwater version of the fish could do. He was a little shaken by the size of the tackle when I handed him a 6/0 but was glad he had it when he figured out how to hook a black grouper. He got his limit but was really taken aback when the first thing he caught was about a 7# octopus. I guess ther aren't too many of those in the Tennessee rivers. We came in with more than just groupers . While my two male anglers had slip leads I had the female angler fish a two hook rig. In addition to the 2 dozen fine snappers she had to throw back she kept 6 triggers and a dozen nice pink snappers. Added to the 7 groupers I had to clean fish for a while for a 4 hour trip. And this was after a full moon the night before. I sure like taking so many lucky anglers out. The snappers are definately coming into the beach. I fished a little further offshore Friday looking for a big bite and we caught snappers on spots that were devoid of them two weeks ago.We found one spot yesterday that was only a mile off the beach and had snapper on it. It should be some wild fishing when snappers reopen April 15th. If your planning an early summer vacation be sure to plan it after the 15th or in May and get in on some fine shallow water fishing. Last year we had snapper limits on most of even the 4 hour trips from opening day all through May and into June. I think there may be even more fish moving in this year than last. There were a couple more cobia caught the end of last week. I haven't gone looking yet but as soon as we get three pretty days in a row I'm out there, charter or not. I'd about rather sight fish for cobias than any thing else I've found on this planet so far. The slow days are like flying- hours of boredom- but when you find a wad of 50# to 100# crabcrunchers swimming right up on top the adrenalin kicks into overdrive! Give me a call and book a day- you can't call it a real vacation if you don't go fishin'!
