Report for Destin, Florida - Nearshore

Destin

TIME TO CHANGE THE SCENERY It's July 1st and as soon as this is typed I'm off to chase tarpon. Not just half a bubble off as some of you may think either! Some of the guides around Indian Pass have started running Tarpon trips this past week and the reports have been fantastic. I was running in from snapper fishin' yesterday and capt Time Harvey's voice comes over the nextel "Houston, we have ignition !" he was on his 3rd Tarpon trip of the season and had launched what he said was a big one. For Tim to be this exited I'm sure it was over 175#. He said he had gotten fish over 100# to the boat on both of the trips earlier in the week and that "there are tarpon all over and they are hungry! As much as I like ALL kinds of fishin' it is a great change of pace to just look for one BIG fish rather than a box full of dinners--- We have done very well getting the box full of epicurian delights this past week. Lot's of snappers and a good mix of kings, groupers, tiggers, and mahi. My last trip was part of a group that had booked 4 days this past week. The lead angler gets on the boat saying that they have plenty of fish to take home and wants to chase "big ones rather than lots". I told him that with the moon being full the past 2 nights it was going to be the hardest day of the month to catch big groupers up on the beach. We ran down the beach to a great grouper hole and soaked for while. I finally had to drop down to 40# leaders get some bites. Still not voracious but they did bite. Unfortunately after 45 minutes we only had 1 snapper in the box and I had tied on half a bag of hooks to replace the ones that the groupers had broken off. I made a move and we went to cathin' snappers pretty good and put some show in the box. Back to a grouper hole and the gal on the trip (that's never been before) puts 2 nice gags on the deck in quick order. My 3 male anglers go thru the rest of that bag of hooks--- Another snapper stop and we have a 20 fish limit in the box. Back to grouper fishin' and we have a winner! My lead angler gets 2 nice ones in the 15# range up in quick sucsesion to cap off the box. We had a nice king, and a couple trigers in there too just for good measure. Like I always say- Be carefull bringing your wives, daghters or girlfriends. They WILL out fish you!!!! Tune in in 10 days or so and I should have a Tarpon report. I ended up open this coming Fri- July 6th- if any one wants a last minute trip, Give me a call and we'll try to get you some braggin' rights and a big silver scale. One about the size of a saucer is always a great story starter!! Capt Larry Pentel
