Report for Long Island Sound

Norwalk Islands

Octogenarian, Bud Mehrlene of Las Vegas, on his annual visit to his sister in Rowayton, had a super day casting into bluefish in the middle of the Sound, boating more than 20 ranging from 3-6 pounds. Then we moved to Sunken Meadow and had non-stop porgy action. All fish but five were released. Then the following day Bud wanted to catch some fluke, and we tried the area off the Coast Guard station, where we caught lots of fluke, but most were shorts. Interestingly enough, Bud wasn't enthusiastic about stripers because he often fishes for them in Lake Mead (and that's about all they catch there.) Matt Rush and party from Fairfield fished the Northport power plant. They had fun casting into the blues 3-5 pound range. After they'd had their fill, we moved east and found a school of porgies, with everyone bringing in scup which ran as long as 15". They brought home a lot of their catch for their 25-person cookout that evening. We had a great day June 23, catching blues in three size categories, using surface lures at the Northport stacks. Then midSound we loaded up on large porgies caught on clam bellies. Aboard "My Bonnie" were Tony Mann and his sons, 11-year old Jaal, and 7-year old Lev--visiting from Monteverde, Costa Rica. It was probably the best day of the season, weather wise, and the fishing action was as great as the temperatures and the calm seas. All in all, a perfect 10!
