Tough weekend for some, especially bankies as the high water from the Tughill run-off plagued the wading anglers. Some of the driftboats on the other hand have been in Hog Heaven as the rocks are covered, the water is pushing 50 degrees and the bite has been red hot everyday. Like all fishing if you no where to go and how to fish them under these conditions, high water is always your friend. I am sure the flows will change soon as we are down to 2,700 and it will probably drop again soon. We will need this water in May and the area is already very dry for this time of year. The one and only Fritz Becker, 79 years young, spent four days with me and if I said we pushed three figures on fish numbers you would call me a liar, so I won't. Needless to say he got tired of reeling in fish, (NOT) and we took them with every method there is. In fact, in one spot, he landed 5 swinging a big bunny leech, (see photo), three of which smashed it on the surface, then 3 on pink egg sacs and then we plugged our way out and hit 3 more on Luhr Jensen Hot shots. That was 11 fish in just one spot!! This is without a doubt some of the best true fly fishing I have ever seen on this river. A few from each day Reports from Lake Ontario vary from poor to fantastic, depending on the day and the spot. The fish are there, but sunny days, flat water and off-shore winds will make it a challenge at times. Western New York fishing report by Jay Peck – www.jaypeckguides.com Oak Orchard River -- Water flows are dropping and clearing quickly with the dry weather. There are groups of spawning steelhead spread out through the Oak. Look for these fish in the fast moving watcher. Water temperatures have been above 50 degrees for about a week now. Experience over the years has told me that once we have about two weeks of water temperatures above 50 degrees, the steelhead run will quickly wind down. Even still if you're willing to look sometimes you can find a few stragglers running and to spawn. My best guess is one more week, of decent fishing and then stragglers after that. All of the area smaller creeks and rivers are pretty much done with their steelhead run for the year. If this dry weather continues, Genesee River may have some steelhead fishing still in it. The water flows have been extremely high since late winter. No one has been able to do much fishing on the Genesee River. If the water temperatures do not get too high in the 60 degree range there may still be a few steelheads around to fish for. My suggestion would be to look up river from Seth Green Island and the trench in front of the island. Open Dates May 14, 18, 20, 21, 22, 26, 27, 29 all good days for browns or Oneida Lake Walleye.
