September brings the Bulls to Port Royal sound

Beaufort

As the month of September has already slipped half away, another great opportunity for fish in the lowcountry arises. Our breeding population of Redfish, known as bulls, move inside from the ocean to deep holes in the sound, and several bridge sites. These fish run from 15 to 40 pounds. The run usually lasts around 5 weeks before they regroup and head back to sea. Naturally they are all released as they are way above our maximum slot limit of 23 inches. Fishing for them means a little heavier tackle, with a good 6 or 7/0 circle hook for easy release. And if we are catching them in 30 feet or so of water. many times they need to be vented before release to allow them to go back down. We work hard to handle these fish carefully as they are the future of our redfishing, and we need every one of them to be healthy and strong. Enjoy the thrill of catching one, but be respectful of the fish and release them properly.Tight lines.
