Winter time Redfish in the Lowcountry

It is that time of year again, when the Redfish are schooled up tight on the flats. With most of the bait gone south, our resident dolphin population turns to Redfish as their number one pick on the menu. And this triggers the Reds to school up big time, simply as an act of survival. We take advantage of this by fishing the last couple of hours of the outgoing, and first couple of the incoming, tides. It is our best sight fishing of the year, as our waters are usually very clear. Lots of bait options work, from Gulps to spoons to live mud minnows. Being stealthy is very important, as once you rile up the school, the bite will shut off. Seeing a hundred or more Reds in casting distance is a really big rush, and one you need to try if you have never done. It can be addictive.
