South Florida Report - Flamingo, Biscayne Bay & Miami

Flamingo

November This weekend I am off to fish the Redbone Tournament in Islamorada, this benefits Cystic Fibrosis charity. This is a angler/celebrity paired up for 2 days of fishing. There are some big name sport stars that attend these functions, Jim Kelly, Wade Boggs, Earl Morral, and plenty more. 110207 Today I am fishing with one of my regular clients that will go fish anywhere or anytime I call. I told him I was going to be down and he said "tell me where". The wind is howling and there is a lot of clouds from the effects of Tropical Storm Noel, but we still went out. On the way out I spotted a Tarpon roll I told Sergio to cast his Twitch n Rap. It didn't take long and he was hooked up, we had a 30 minute "free for all" catching 4 and jumping 12 others. Once the bite slowed we went looking for Bonefish, the conditions were horrible windy and cloudy make tough Bonefishing. We checked a few spots and finally found a nice school which we just sat and watched for a few minutes, this is what I needed to find the following day. The weather was just brutal so we decided to go have lunch, then I could be on my way down to Islamorada for tonight's Captains meeting and Auction at the Cheea lodge. I met my anglers Arnie Seidel and Joey Cornblit or "Joey" as he was known as a professional Jai Alai. This was cool for me because I used to watch him play. We were set for the morning 110307 The conditions this morning are bad there's no other way to explain it. I decided to run to Flamingo for Redfish, I have an area that would out of the wind and had been holding plenty of fish. Soon as we got in the area the heard and saw baits we getting popped on the surface, this gave me some hope! There were some incredible sounds being made but we could not get hooked up. There were numerous species beating up the baits and we did have a few good hits, but came unglued. Arnie and Joey cast and cast covering a lot of water, Joey had a nice hit and caught a Redfish. We were on the board! This area typically holds a lot of Snook and they are not here either, I think they were all outside of us popping the baits. We tried fishing the bait schools and no bite there either. I decided it was time to start trying other spots after Arnie caught a Snook. I ran from spot to spot and looked, we finally found some fish at 2 o'clock, they looked at us like we were crazy for casting at them. We had a handful of shots and they were just spooky for some reason. Time ran out and we made the trip back to the Lorelie for a well deserved drink. 110407 I walked out of the house this morning and said "where the heck did all this wind come" from it was calm last night. My buddy Mark which I stayed with was dumbfounded as well, it was blowing even harder than the day before. I met Arnie and Joey at the Lorelie and Arnie said what's the game Plan! We agreed since we didn't have such a great day let's just go fish and have fun. The run over was brutal for the first 15 minutes but then we were able to get some cover from the islands, we finally arrived to the spot and it didn't take so long today. Joey had a Redfish within 5 minutes but it came off right at the boat. It wasn't very long after he hooked up, this time a Black Drum. It was finally Arnies turn to catch a Redfish and I think he ended up with 6 or 7 plus a Snook. Joey caught a couple more we had to leave the tide was getting really low. I told them we were just going to work our way back and hit a bunch of spots but the fish did not cooperate we gave it a good shot but time was up. I apologized to them for the lack luster fishing but we had so many elements against us! I felt better when we got back and everyone else experienced the same thing, all in all it was a good weekend. The seasons have officially changed with our first cold fronts making there way thru. The temperatures are really comfortable and fishing all day is not so grueling. There are loads of bait and the predators are right behind them getting fat for the winter.
