St Simons Island Trout Fishing Explosion

St. Simons Island

I honestly can't remember when the trout have been so plentiful. In 30 years of fishing the salt marshes of the southeast, this is probably one of the best I have ever seen. The Sea Trout fishing on the Georgia coast may be unrivaled right now. Most of the fish range from 12-18 inches with many fish in the 18-22 inch range. The state of Georgia has imposed a 15 fish limit per person with a 13" minimum which suits the fishery well. Whether you fish out of a boat, kayak or canoe, trout can be found at nearly any creek mouth. Areas with a combination of grass, shell, clean water and a bit of current can be productive. Anglers are taking these fine eating fish on an array of tackle. One of the tried and true methods is a popping cork. Simply tie on about 26-28 inches of leader and put a live or imitatinon shrimp on the business end, and you are ready to fish. Trout are being taken equally as well on suspending plugs, topwaters, and soft plastics as well. Anglers throughout the Golden Isles are reporting catches of 30 to 60 fish on a daily basis. Over the last two weeks we have caught and released over 400 trout. Along with the trout explosion many anglers are reporting great catches of slot sized redfish, sheepshead and black drum. Until next time, you won't know if you don't go. {%image_id=30209%} {%image_id=30210%} {%image_id=30211%}
