Winter Snook and Redfish

Boca Grande

January fishing has been very good. We are catching tailing redfish on fliesevery day during the full and new moon tide phases because the tides are very low. Sight fishing along shorelines has been tougher during the full and new moon because it takes so long for the water to get on the banks. When the tides get higher they do move onto the shorelines and this makes for great sightfishing. Today the tides stayed very low and the fish were tailing as far as the eye could see. We caught and released 10 tailers between 24-30 inches. Overall the redfishing is very good right now and the boat traffic is minimal. Snook fishing has also been good. We have not had too many cold fronts and that has kept alot of Snook around the passes. Little Gasparilla pass has been loaded all fall. The creeks have not filled up the way they can when we have colder winters. When it is warm I have been sight fishing along shorelines and the fish that I have seen are eating very well. The water temperatures last week were over 70 degrees and in the afternoons I was getting 80 degree readings in the shallow flats. As cold fronts approach and the south wind gets blowing that is when Snook fishing has been the best. Yesterday it was overcast the south wind was blowing and the Snook were swimming down the shorelines eating topwater flies. We boated 7 in 2 hours between 22-30 inches. I thought it was very good. Today it was cold and I did not see a snook. I confess we only fished for tailing redfish today. Tight lines and Happy fishing
