Wrightsville Beach to Cape Fear River

Wrightsville Beach

Week Ending July 16, 2003 Hi folks, The frequent and sometimes heavy rains the past week have kept the Rod-Man inside much of the week. However we have been able to get out a few times with pretty good results. Today we had some very nice drum action and one flounder that was 5.1 pounds. Here's my report: For the week ending July 16, 2003: Inshore: Good to very good red drum action on both the incoming and the falling tides. As always best bait is menhaden, either alive or big chunks, fished on a stout carolina rig. Good flounder action in the inlets with most of the flounder being good sized. Nearshore: The spanish mackerel continue to play hide and seek. You catch them one day and not the next. I think if the water would clear up the spanish would be more reliable. Offshore: King mackerel, cobia, and the year's first sailfish have shown up from 6 to 30 miles out with nice mahi added to the mix. Best fishing has been around the artificial reefs with live bait. Gulfstream: Primary action has been a good summer run of yellowfin tuna, with good catches of mahi and wahoo also being reported. Plenty of fish around just about wherever you choose to fish, so get out on the water. Be sure to check out the pic of the week at www.rodmancharters.com. Let's Go Fishing! Capt.
